Stage 1: Prerequisites

Qualified Programs

In order to qualify for the experienced officer program in BC, candidates must have completed their basic police training at one of the following training centres:
  • Justice Institute of BC (JIBC)
  • RCMP Training Academy (Depot)
  • Ontario Police College
  • Chief Crowfoot Learning Centre (Calgary Police Service)
  • Edmonton Police Service, Basic Recruit Training
  • Lethbridge College
  • Winnipeg Police Service, Police Recruit Training Academy
  • Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
  • Saskatchewan Police College
  • École Nationale de Police du Québec
  • Atlantic Police Academy
  • Canadian Forces Military Police Academy
Experienced officer applicants must have been a serving police officer for a Canadian police agency in the preceding 36 months.
Stage 2: Initial Screening

Stage 2: Initial Screening (Meet & Greet Interview)

This initial virtual interview focuses on your general suitability, integrity and life experiences. If deemed suitable, you will be invited to move on to Stage 3 of the recruiting process.

Stage 3: Secondary Screening

Stage 3: Secondary Screening (Recruiter's Interview)

This in-person behavioral-based interview focuses on your life skills, experience and abilities. It is recommended that you prepare your answers using the STAR (Situation – Task – Actions – Result) format. Key behavioural competencies we look for in a police officer include:

Stage 4: Documents Request & Credit Check

Stage 4: Documents Request & Credit Check

At this stage, you will be requested to provide various documents and undergo a credit check.  


Stage 5: Medical Assessment

Stage 5: Medical Assessment

You will be required to undergo a hearing and vision test, as well as a psychological assessment which will be performed by a VicPD appointed psychologist.  All of these tests are paid for by VicPD.


Stage 6: Integrity & Lifestyle Questionnaire

Stage 6: Integrity & Lifestyle Questionnaire (ILQ)

At this stage, you will be required to complete the ILQ.  This is a comprehensive personal questionnaire that focuses on honesty,  integrity  and  lifestyle.  These areas are scrutinized  closely  when considering all applications for employment with the Victoria Police Department. Deceit, dishonesty or non-disclosure related to questions in this document, or during any other stage of the application process, will result in being disqualified from the process.

Stage 7: Polygraph

Stage 7: Polygraph

Upon successful completion of Stage 6, you will be required to undergo a polygraph examination.  The Integrity & Lifestyle Questionnaire will form the basis of this examination.

Stage 8: Final Screening

Stage 8:  Final Screening (HR Interview)

Upon successful completion of the polygraph examination, you will be invited to attend an in-person panel interview with members of the HR recruiting team. This interview will be behaviour based.

Stage 9: Occupational Health Assessment

Stage 9: Occupational Health Assessment

Upon successfully moving on from the Final Screening stage, you will be required to undergo a physical health assessment to ensure you are ready and able to carry out the occupational requirements of a police officer.

Stage 10: Background Investigation

Upon the successful completion of the occupational health assessment, you will be required to undergo a comprehensive background investigation.

Stage 11: Offer of Employment

Stage 11: Offer of Employment

Congratulations!  You've successfully completed the recruiting process.  The Chief Constable or designate will make the final determination as to whether or not an offer of employment will be made. 

FAQs

Can I apply directly to a specific Division or Section?

No.  All experienced members start in the Patrol division and are expected to complete two (2) years there before applying to others divisions or sections.

How long do I need to wait before applying for a promotion?

All police members must have at least seven (7) years experience with a recognized Canadian Police service, and three (3) years with VicPD before being eligible for promotion.

Will my existing pension transfer over?

Does my seniority carry over to VicPD?

No. However, if you are a currently a serving member of a Canadian police department, you may be eligible to receive recognition for past years of service for annual leave allotment and level of pay with VicPD.

Will my relocation expenses be paid by VicPD?

You will be responsible for paying the costs of relocating.

If I am the currently the subject of an internal or external investigation, can I still apply?

No. We will not review your application until all investigations that you are the subject of are resolved.
