Professional Staff (Civilian)

The Victoria Police Department relies on a dedicated team of civilian professionals to function effectively and provide excellent service to the citizens and communities of Victoria and Esquimalt.  We offer exceptional employment opportunities for meaningful careers outside of becoming a police officer. There are over 80 civilians currently employed at VicPD with the vast majority being unionized under CUPE Local 50, and a small number being Exempt.

Qualifications & Prerequisites

To qualify as a Professional Civilian, you must meet the minimum qualifications and prerequisites listed below.

Qualifications

  • Meet the requirements of VicPD for background and comprehensive security checks, including a polygraph exam
  • Maturity derived from varied life experience
  • Demonstrated responsibility, initiative, creativity and problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to people whose culture, lifestyle or ethnicity is different than your own
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age 19 years
  • No criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Grade 12 High School equivalency (GED)

    FAQs

    Is there support of ongoing professional development?

    Yes, each Division is allocated a training budget for civilian staff to take supervisor approved courses and attend supervisor approved conferences.  

    Are the benefits comprehensive?

    Our benefit programs support our regular full-time employees based on the unique challenges of working in a policing environment.  In addition to fulsome traditional benefits coverage, including extended health and dental, life insurance and pension plan contributions, there is also a robust Employee and Family Assistance Program and many other mental health and well-being initiatives.

    Is there access to a gym?

    Yes, the on-site gym is available for use 24/7.  

    Do the professional civilians belong to a Union?

    The large majority of our civilian employees are unionized and members of CUPE Local 50.  There is a smaller group of civilians who are considered Exempt (non-unionized) staff. Exempt staff are comprised of Directors, Managers and Executive Assistants.

    Is shift work required?

    Most of our professional positions are dayshift only.  Some are Monday through Friday, others on a dayshift rotational basis.  There are positions within our Information Support Services Section that require our employee to work days and nights on a rotating basis.
